New report: European battery storage grows 15% in 2024, EU
Balancing markets must become fully competitive and accessible to storage, through harmonised technical standards and transparent procurement. Europe must enhance
Comments from a firm that's been in the headlines recently for BESS in Europe provide a perfect example. As the Summit kicked off last week, developer Lion Storage announced financial close on a 350MW/1,400MWh BESS in the Netherlands, the largest in the country to do so.
At the end of 2023, Europe's total operating BESS fleet stood at 35.8 GWh, with the residential segment constituting the bulk of the accumulated capacity (63%), followed by large-scale battery systems (27%) and C&I (10%). © SOLARPOWER EUROPE 2024 © SOLARPOWER EUROPE 2024
According to the Medium Scenario, the cumulative BESS capacity projections for Europe spanning between 2024 and 2028 show strong growth rates between 62% in 2024 and 43% in 2028 (Fig. 28).
It showed annual growth rates of 197%, mainly driven by the massive expansion of the residential battery segment. Last year, Czech households installed 910 MWh of solar & storage, the highest BESS-PV attachment rate in Europe (94%). This record level has been achieved thanks to the very well-established support of the New Green Savings Programme.
