A Greener Capital: Delhi''s solar, WtE and EV initiatives
In April 2025, the Delhi assembly introduced a plan to install a 500 kV rooftop solar system within 100 days. Currently, the assembly has two 100 kW solar plants. The proposed
Apart from this, under the new solar policy, the Delhi government is also offering a solar subsidy in addition to the CFA. Through the recently launched National Portal for Rooftop Solar, one can directly apply for solar subsidy online and track the entire process from application submission to transfer of funds to the respective bank account.
One of the major announcements was an additional subsidy of Rs 30,000 (Rs 10,000 per kW) for residential solar panel installations. With this, the total subsidy now stands at Rs 1.08 lakh per household — the highest ever under any such scheme. For a 1 kW solar system, Delhi residents will receive Rs 10,000 from the state government alone.
Under the approved plan, in addition to the existing Rs 78,000 central subsidy for up to 3 kW rooftop solar systems, the Delhi Government will now provide direct financial assistance of up to Rs 30,000. This is being implemented under the 'State Top-Up' component of the Free Electricity Scheme, with a budget allocation of Rs 50 crore.
At the time of the policy announcement, Delhi's installed rooftop solar capacity stood at 237 MW, which has increased to 313.4 MW, as of March 31 2025, indicating a 32 per cent increase in a year. This growth reflects the early impact of the policy, which catalysed a surge in rooftop solar adoption across the capital.
