EUROPEAN REGULATIONS FOR OUTDOOR ENERGY
How big will energy storage be in the EU in 2026? Looking forward, the International Energy Agency (IEA) expects global installed storage capacity to expand by 56% in the next 5 years
A new interactive platform—the European Energy Storage Inventory —has been launched to provide near real-time insights into energy storage deployment across the EU, marking a major step toward a smarter and more sustainable energy system.
Developed as part of the REPowerEU Plan, the platform is the first at European level to map all forms of clean energy storage technologies. It offers a comprehensive view of the continent's storage infrastructure—from pumped hydro and battery systems to emerging technologies like hydrogen and thermal storage.
Particularly noteworthy is the ambitious project in Alfeld (Lower Saxony), which is considered the largest approved storage project in Europe with a performance of 137.5 megawatts and a storage capacity of 275 megawatt hours.
The European Union has created a comprehensive regulatory framework in recent years to promote the development and use of energy storage technologies. A central element of this framework is the recognition of energy storage as an independent component of the energy system in the EU electricity market directive.
